BikeRescue Hits the Red Gravel Road

There are around 60 new bikes cruising around WA's outback communities thanks to a series of BikeRescue programs funded by our partners at Kennards Hire, the APA, Doterra and Connellan Airways

The programs took place in Geraltdon, Kununurra, Mount Magnet, Leonora, Morowa and Mullewa with great success. Several of the regional communities had local elders present to be trained up in bike mechanics so the young people can continue to enjoy their bikes and recycle new ones into the future.

The programs were a targeted response to high disengagement levels present amongst particular cohorts. We’re proud to share that every BikeRescue program had above 90% attendance and graduation over the 5 - 10 session workshop.

The BikeRescue programs have been an incredible journey for this group of young people, who have shown tremendous dedication and passion throughout. Their involvement has not only empowered them with practical skills but also fostered a deep sense of community and responsibility.

We are grateful for the unwavering support from the school and all stakeholders, who have played a pivotal role in making this initiative a success. Together, we've created more than just restored bikes—we’ve built a stronger, more connected community. - Barnaby, Program Manager.

Taylor's Story

“Taylor” began her journey with ReNew in early 2021 at the age of 22. Initially reserved and cautious, she encountered challenges in finding her voice among team leaders and fellow youth employees. However, over time, Taylor's transformation became increasingly apparent.

Gradually, she overcame her social anxieties and embraced the opportunity to connect with her colleagues at ReNew and Dismantle, particularly when conversations revolved around her deep passion for horses and animals. Growing up surrounded by farms and horses, Taylor possessed a natural connection and knowledge for animals.

Over the past three years, Taylor's journey has been remarkable, with staff from all areas of Dismantle commenting on her growth. Starting from tentative steps into HQ, she has evolved into a confident and empowered individual, almost unrecognisable from the shy young woman who first walked through Dismantle's doors.

Fuelled by her passion and newfound confidence, Taylor approached Belvoir Equine Hospital, where they immediately noticed her fantastic work ethic and love for the horses, quickly moving from one day a week to almost full-time employment. A pivotal moment in her journey was when she confidently addressed the entire office to announce her new position— something that seemed unimaginable just a few years earlier.

"Taylor's journey has been the most significant confidence transformation I've witnessed in my three years at ReNew. She has overcome significant personal hurdles along the way with maturity and compassion for the people around her. I couldn't be prouder of her, and can’t wait to hear about her continued success in pursuing her passions." – Team Leader at ReNew

Taylor's dedication and enthusiasm not only secured her an exceptional employment opportunity but also transformed her into a symbol of confidence and self-assurance. Her growth stands as a testament to her resilience and determination, inspiring everyone around her. We are incredibly proud to witness Taylor's journey and celebrate her remarkable achievements. Congratulations, Taylor, on reaching this incredible milestone!

Term 1 Highlight: Donnybrook Regional BikeRescue Program

BikeRescue has begun 2024 on a high note, hosting multiple programs across metropolitan and regional Western Australia during Term 1. Among these, the regional program in Donnybrook stood out as a significant highlight.

All ten participants, aged between 12 and 14, successfully graduated from the program and proudly took home their refurbished bikes as a symbol of their achievements. They demonstrated eagerness to learn new skills and build positive relationships, impressing the BikeRescue mentors with their growth and determination across the three sessions.

Before the program commenced, our partners and mentors established clear goals focused on fostering relationships, teamwork, and mentorship skills. Throughout the sessions, the group collaborated on bike refurbishments, acquiring not only technical skills but also valuable lessons in teamwork and leadership.

Participants emerged from the program equipped with essential life skills, including self-management and effective collaboration, while forming meaningful connections with their peers. As they tackled unfamiliar challenges, their confidence grew, paving the way for personal development and empowerment.

One participant, Chris, initially reserved, gradually found his voice as the program unfolded. With encouragement from our mentors, he became an active participant, eagerly participating in group activities. Through hands-on experiences, Chris not only honed practical skills but also found a supportive environment where he felt comfortable expressing himself.

Dismantle extends our sincere thanks to all the partners whose support made this program possible. As we prepare for Term 2, we welcome anyone interested in organising or supporting a BikeRescue program for the remainder of the year to reach out to us through our website.
