Beau's Story

Beau has been involved with Dismantle since 2019, where he has progressed from a volunteer, to a JobReadii participant, to a BikeDr employee. His obsession with BMX, racing and building bikes is what first brought him into the volunteering workshop when he was 14.

Beau was homeschooled due to issues at high school, so his Grandad decided to bring him into Dismantle’s Saturday Volunteering. Beau struggled with confidence and communication, often keeping to himself, or sticking with his grandad during the sessions. However, his passion for bikes always shone through. His experience at school caused him turn down any suggestions for further education and it was clear to Beau and his family that his passions were elsewhere.

When Beau first came to Dismantle, his lack of confidence made him feel like he wasn’t skilled enough to work with bikes for anything other than a hobby. As he continued coming to the Saturday sessions, staff could see he would benefit from Dismantle’s JobReadii program.

JobReadii focuses on supported employment, to help participants with work readiness skills and emotional support. Due to his passion for bikes, Beau completed a 6-week placement at BikeDr, where his confidence in communicating with his co-workers and customers continued to improve.

 

Now 17, Beau’s confidence has grown tenfold since he first walked in the door at Dismantle, both in his bike skills and social ability. After the conclusion of his JobReadii work placement, BikeDr offered Beau a part-time employment contract.

His enthusiasm, helpful nature and passion for bikes make Beau a great fit at BikeDr, where he is a valued member of the team. Beau even has time to still come down to volunteer on Saturdays at Dismantle from time to time.

Pat Ryan awarded Westpac Fellowship and joins WASEC steering committee

Congratulations is in order for Dismantle CEO, Pat Ryan, who has been selected as a Westpac Social Change Fellow. He’s one of two WA-based leaders of a social enterprise to be selected, out of a group of ten, all of whom (Pat very much included) are superstars in their own field. Fellows are supported on a six month personal development journey, specifically to develop their leadership potential. Pat plans to travel nationally and internationally to engage with other organisations who are creatively providing employment support for at-risk young people. He’s going to observe best practice from all around the world to improve not only Dismantle’s approach, but that of the wider WA sector. 

Pat's also been busy guiding WA’s Social Enterprise sector towards big things with his role in the establishment of the WA Social Enterprise Council (WASEC).  WASEC is a voice for WA’s social enterprise network, an accreditation and certification body for emerging social enterprises and a proud member of the Alliance of Social Enterprise Networks Australia. 

It’s early days yet, but the organisation intends to support and develop the sector with a focus on social procurement across all sectors, social enterprise accreditation, robust impact and outcomes measurement frameworks, legal and financial structures and support and ethical, values-driven stewardship. Pat Ryan, with his experience in establishing both BikeDr and ReNew as social enterprises, was invited to join the organisation’s steering committee. He’ll be representing established social enterprises and will be helping WASEC establish its advocacy practices to foster a thriving, collaborative social enterprise sector in WA.

New faces around the boardroom table

There have been some movements on the board lately, with two departures, two additions and a new Chairperson taking on the leadership role. We bid a very sad but warm farewell to Lachy and Bridie Ritchie, the sibling team who started it all, founding Dismantle back in 2010 with nothing but some big ideas and a shipping container in a park. Bridie stepped down as chairperson a little while ago, while Lachy has more recently decided to leave his position as board member, both to pursue exciting opportunities in other parts of the sector.

Meanwhile, long-time board member, Phillip Renshaw will be moving into the position of chair, lending his steady leadership skills to the role. We also welcome Robb Knott and Steve Binnie into the fold; both join the team with an extensive and diverse range leadership experience across sectors.
